I live in the USA and I am concerned about the future. I created this blog to share my thoughts on the economy and anything else that might catch my attention.

Quantum Levitation

A special thank you to the person who emailed me a link to this video. I'd credit you but I consider emails private.
I think the stock market has been using Farscape Quantum Singularity technology for the past decade. ;)
In the episode "Back and Back and Back to the Future", a scientist belonging to the Ilanic race develops a Quantum Singularity to be used as an ultimate weapon against their enemies. It was described essentially as a portable black hole.
The JR-Maglev system uses an Electro-dynamic Suspension (EDS) system. The maglev-trains have superconducting magnetic coils, and the guide ways contain levitation coils. As the train moves, its moving magnetic fields create a current in the levitation coils because of the magnetic field induction effect. These currents create a magnetic field that interacts with the magnetic field of the superconductive coils to create a force that holds up and stabilises the train.
A superconducting coilgun called a quench gun could be created by successively quenching a line of adjacent coaxial superconducting coils forming a gun barrel, generating a wave of magnetic field gradient traveling at any desired speed.
As a physics guy, I love my Fisher and Paykel washing machine that I purchased in 1997. It isn't superconducting technology of course, but it was a huge improvement over the technologies of the past.
In August of 1992 Fisher and Paykel's SmartDrive™ washer made the cover of Appliance magazine, showing the first time an electronically controlled Direct Drive motor had been used in a washing machine. This breakthrough enabled Fisher & Paykel to do away with the belt and pulley drive of their existing washer, by attaching the motor directly to the agitator shaft. The resulting reliability and noise improvements were dramatic but the performance benefits facilitated by increased sensing abilities opened the way for this small company to export this washer to Australia and later the USA.
The coil gun, or gauss gun, is very now. It is available in Fallout 3. Coil guns and rail guns are awesome. The Navy has a mega rail gun that may replace artillery on their ships. Clean death from a distance.
Washing machine motor breakthroughs? Filed under esoteric.
This is amazing. Is that how they are keeping stocks levitated?
ReplyDeleteThat is some cool physics. I wonder if it could be scaled to a train sized operation. Shovel ready?
Mr Slippery,

As for the technology being shovel ready...

Got Quench Gun?

Check this out too.

Mr Slippery,
ReplyDeleteSpin dry: The washing machine that needs just one cup of water
Around 44lb (20kilos) of the chips are added to each load, along with a cup of water and detergent.
During the washing cycle, the water is heated to help dissolve the dirt, which is then absorbed by the plastic chips.
The makers say the chips should be removed at the end of each wash, but can be used up to 100 times - the equivalent of six months washing.
If the chips could then be used at Las Vegas casinos then I think they might really become popular here in America, lol. Sigh.
Mark,
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this.
I didn't dislike the video, but it pisses me off, 'cuz I can't fly like that, and I really, really want to.
ReplyDeleteCheers!

nanute,
ReplyDeleteHey, it's nice to be able to post some real prosperity every now and then! ;)
Jazzbumpa,
ReplyDeleteI have a sure fire way to fly 1,000 feet straight down without actually hurting yourself.
Simply jump off a 1,001 foot cliff!
I can't say the last foot will feel that good though, lol.
P.S. Some days I think our economy uses this same technology. ;)
