Chicago's Cunning Sales Tax Plan

July 17, 2015
Chicago will have nation's highest big-city sales tax rate come January

Chicago stands out because it's a high sales tax amidst a sea of high taxes...

A great number of people across the country will soon be packing up their stuff and moving to the windy city. Everyone loves a winner and the new sales tax will make it #1! Just think of the extra tax revenue that will generate over the long-term!

There is one small problem that could slow them down a bit though.

Talking to a Chicago Crime Reporter About Covering the City's Murders

I hope Chicago media is able to find a way to constantly improve on its murder coverage.

The city with world class taxes really should have world class murder coverage too. That pretty much goes without saying.

  1. The first link to the story by the Chicago Tribune is a testament to the brilliance of Chicago business. When I tried to the read the story, I faced a popup that demanded I subscribe (pay a tax!) or register my information for future spamming. I chose neither and was denied access to their invaluable story. Win-win!

I can't imagine how successful a super high CITY tax rate will be when layered on top of state taxes and federal taxes. It is a sweet layered tax cake that everyone can enjoy. Some back of the envelope math shows that they can raise the most money by setting the tax rate equal to the 100 minus the state tax rate minus the federal tax rate. That brings in the maximum amount of tax, e.g. everything that is left. That should fix their budget problems right up, with or without a lot of murders.

  2. Mr Slippery,

I think they can get to a sustainable 105% if we can grow our debt by at least 5% each year, lol. Sigh.

Well, you know what they say. Laffer is the best medicine! ;)

  3. I too can no longer read the link without subscribing or registering.

It too is a cunning plan.

The old plan was making a tiny amount of money off of advertising.

The new plan is convincing me, a guy in Washington State, to pay for The Chicago Tribune or to enter personal information so advertisements can come directly to me.

Good luck on that new plan! You're going to need it!
