The following chart shows the 12-month moving average of public relations employment.

As seen in blue, that is definitely one of the more impressive parabolic trend failures. Other than the illusion of prosperity, what was it about the 1990s that required so much growth in public relations? That's a rhetorical question of course. So where are we now?
Hey! Look! New all-time record! Woohoo!
As seen in red, we are following a much more "sustainable" and consistent exponential trend. That's certainly a relief. Should the trend continue without failure, eventually everyone in America will work in public relations. Just think! We can all be spin doctors when we grow up!
3.9% annual growth should be more than enough to deal with oil rig leaks, oil spills, chipset math flaws, laced cyanide scares, toxic gas leaks, contaminated ground water, unloved streaming video price hikes, failed attempts to charge customers monthly fees for using their debit cards, any changes to Coca Cola cans and/or their contents, financial derivatives broker bankruptcies, major accounting scandals, major bank failures, shrinking same store sales growth, racist remarks by corporate executives, the canceling of favored TV shows, NFL off-field antics, pink slime, cruise ship groundings, cruise ship infectious diseases, the exploiting of hurricanes for corporate profit, insider trading, fast food employee antics, Sandusky, Deen, Weiner, Sterling, Spitzer, Celebutard, Ghettopoly, lip-synching, wardrobe malfunctions, the stranding of passengers on runways, the removal of blind people and their service dogs from commercial planes, the removal of commercial planes from the sky in ways other than safe landings, tire defects, ignition defects, accelerator defects, air bag defects, tobacco industry claims that smoking deaths have "positive effects", automakers taking private jets to DC to beg for more bailouts, post-bailout corporate retreat parties, thongs for kids, melamine, Secret Service scandals, ISIS, Ukraine, and last but not least, Bieber.
Perhaps I should have broken that into more than one sentence and not implied that the list was somehow exhaustive. Oops. There's no time like the present to hire a PR firm to put a positive spin on my mishap!

Some people don't need pr. They're protected by the system.
Straight shooter Bill O'Reilly is one such person. No spin zone and all that. No spin at all. Bill is the most moral and righteous person on the planet. He tells us so daily.
Gentle Ben Bernanke doesn't need pr either. Bernanke endeared himself to the public after claiming that his adjustable mortgage "exploded" when it didn't.
Those are rare exceptions though. Most entities and people need pr. Just look at our over-flowing prison population. Pr is a growth industry trend failures or no trend failures.
If I didn't know better, I'd think pr was a way to outsource lying. A degree of separation. A way to make "plausible deniability" plausible.
Sure glad I know better.
mab,
Sure glad I know better.
Hahaha!
Sit 'n Spin for the win! ;)
