The Sarcasm Report v.123

5 stocks for the decline of the US

The nation's economy is a major mess, and the situation is unlikely to change soon. Investors, take note -- and turn to stocks with strong global ties and better growth potential.

I wonder what the 5 stocks for the decline of the highly coupled global economy are?

Decoupling

Contrary to what the decouplers would have expected, the losses were greater outside the United States, with the worst experienced in emerging markets and developed economies like Germany and Japan. Exports make up especially large portions of economic activity in those places, but that fact was not supposed to matter anymore in a decoupled world because domestic activity was thought to be so robust.

The only one of the five that strikes me as a good long term investment is potash. People have to eat. They don't necessarily need to build new infrastructure, drink soda, eat burgers, or smoke.

Who Struck John,

Agreed. That said, if you know what the fair long-term inflation adjusted price of potash is please let me know.

Potash

After years of trending upward, fertilizer use slowed in 2008. The worldwide economic downturn is the primary reason for the declining fertilizer use, dropping prices and mounting inventories.

How about phosphates too?

dearieme,

Wow!

Rock Phosphate

Aren't worldwide fertility rates dropping? If so, that suggests potash has already peaked.

Mark, being as GYSC opened up a wormhole on gaming, guess who I thought about when I came across this while checking out Bethesda's new game 'Rage'?

"Dear Diary,

It's the little things you miss most in the postapocalypse. Government, laws, small bits of your humanity--you learn to adapt quickly without those luxuries to survive. But toilet paper…now that's a whole other story. I've done some things that I'm not too proud of to get a roll of that stuff. It's basically gold by today's standards."

Lol!

Charles Kiting,

Surely there must be ONE exponential growth trend that isn't failing yet (other than the growth of our national debt of course).

GYSC,

My girlfriend assures me that if I ever get to that stage that she will smother me in my sleep. I'm not entirely sure she's jokiing!

Watchtower,

LOL!

Most don't realize how much something is missed until it is gone. I take basic necessities very seriously.

If push comes to shove, I would not trade one roll of toilet paper for one Comcast On Demand movie rental. Let's just put it that way.

Charles Kiting,

Yes! I feel so much better now, lol. Sigh.

When the dead fill the graves
But there's no room for slaves
That's cremation

When the world tries to dine
But there is no cheap swine
That's cremation
