I was planning on providing more information about gold today but realized (after reading their disclaimer) that the source data was not free to use. The site specifically states that I cannot use it for even my own historical database purposes, much less share it with others.
Therefore, I have deleted the posts that used the data (and with it some of your comments).
Sorry about that!

I guess that means there really isn't a free lunch. On the other hand I have always looked at it that if someone tells you something is free run the other way.

Kevin,
I'm working on a few alternative precious metal charts using "free" data supplied by our government. I'll be posting that at some point.
The reason I've been posting these charts in the first place is because the "free" money offered in 2004 made me personally "run the other way" from our fiat currency. Go figure.
As I ponder these simple charts my imagination runs wild with the advanced charts created by the big investment houses using the latest supercomputers. I remind myself that LTCM ate from the "free lunch" trough too, then vomited. D'oh!
I guess that pretty much backs your point 100%, with a 100% correlation. If only it worked that way in the real world. Every investment would be a "sure" thing. All reward and no risk! If only!
I have a funny attitude about the license issue. It is my (philosophic/moral) opinion that once you actively post something on the public Internet, you have declared it free to use to all comers.
lab rat,
Yeah, I have to admit that I find it odd that the site would post the gory details of historical gold prices on their site IN ADDITION to their charts and not expect people to build their own personal databases at the very least.
But hey, they specifically state I can't. Therefore, I will honor their wishes. I do think they're suffering from the laws of unintended consequences here though. I no longer have links to their SALES site since I no longer have links to their data.
Oh well!
