George Jetson: age 34, is a loving family man who always seems to make the wrong decision. He works "full-time," 9 hours a week, at Spacely's Sprockets as a computer engineer.

Why can't I get a 9 hour work week instead of a 49 hours work week?

OK, some of those hours are voluntary side jobs, but still. Give me a 13 hours work week, that is the next highest prime. The good news is that with furloughs in place, I am working an average of 152 hours a month. Can't complain. There are plenty of games to fill my spare time.

I think my unemployed girlfriend is dragging down your average.

She was told she was hired well over a month ago. So far she's worked a grand total of zero hours. They keep telling her to come in on a given day but then change their minds at the last moment. That's happened 10-15 times so far. No joke. The excuses are different each time and there's been so many I can't even remember them all.

The best one was that about a month after they officially agreed to hire her (and the day before she was scheduled to work), she was informed that they needed to do a background check on her. That took about a week.

That's happened 10-15 times so far. No joke.

11-16 times!

My girlfriend was supposed to start work today at noon working for the college that she attends.

She was told not to come in.

They are rethinking the wisdom of a part-time student having access to confidential information. Of course, this now means that a previous excuse of needing a criminal background check is now moot. She passed it. Wasn't good enough apparently, nor was her 15+ years of human resources experience (that's what she did for a living in the real world).

They still want to hire her. They just need to rethink what they want her to do. Perhaps something that doesn't require her to see any names or numbers on forms. *sarcasm*

If the big bucks are paid to those who can repeatedly rethink, then the top management at the college she attends must be approaching the net worth of Warren Buffett.
