Banana-Republic Economy

August 18, 2009
The Greenback Effect

We don’t want our country to evolve into the banana-republic economy described by Keynes. - Warren Buffett

Here's something I wrote last year.

What You Would Expect to See in a Developing Country

I guess that means we are a developing country now. If nothing else, we've got a banana republic trade deficit.

Keep in mind that this was written well before the stock market cratered. The DJIA closed that day at 12,720.23. I thought we were well on our way to becoming a banana republic then. Just imagine what I'm thinking now.

It's worse to become a no-banana republic.
