Poor Bowlly died in the Blitz.
dearieme,
Thanks for the WW2 trivia. My dad served in the war so it holds an interest for me.
Al Bowlly
On 17 April 1941, Bowlly and Messene had just given a performance at the Rex Cinema in Oxford Street, High Wycombe, now demolished. Both were offered the opportunity of an overnight stay in the town, but Bowlly opted to take the last train home to his flat at 32 Duke Street, Duke's Court, St James, London. His decision proved to be fatal, as he was killed by a Luftwaffe parachute mine that detonated outside his flat later that evening. His body appeared unmarked: although the massive explosion had not disfigured him, it had blown his bedroom door off its hinges and the impact against his head proved fatal.
I am very grateful that I was born in the mid 1960s. I managed to avoid war happening anywhere near me. Hopefully, that trend will continue.
There are certainly worse ways to die than to be killed by a Luftwaffe parachute mine, assuming that it kills nearly instantly.
If we ever experience a nuclear war, I'd prefer to be at ground zero than a few miles away. Let's just put it that way.
