Some Much Needed Optimism for Recent Computer Science Graduates

July 8, 2015
Microsoft to cut up to 7,800 jobs

The job cuts are in addition to the 18,000 positions Microsoft said it planned to cut a year ago.

That can be a pretty scary headline for those who recently graduated college with the intent to start a long-term career at Microsoft. I just want you to remember that all hope is not lost though.

When a retailer claims that everything in the store is "up to" 50% off, we all know that the average discount is closer to 10%, if we're lucky. Similarly, when a company says that it is laying off "up to" 7,800 workers, the actual number of workers laid off will be much closer to 7,799.

So cheer up! Things aren't nearly as bad as they seem!

But why in the world would a recent grad want to start a long-term career at Microsoft anyway? MSFT has been a dinosaur for almost 20 years now.

Pacioli,

This is supposed to be an optimistic post and yet here you are with all of that negativity! ;)
